From any vantage point, the view is bright at Viewmont High, and NWL Architects’ 130,000-square-foot renovation of the school expanded these views multifold with a stunning glass-filled entrance lobby and exterior plaza. For the renovation, NWL addressed Davis School District’s top priority issues for the aging high school with multiple programming and design options that implemented stakeholder input and provided the best possible design solutions for the school. The result was a new cohesive, safe front entrance lobby and exterior plaza that leads directly from new visitor parking through a secure vestibule and into the public areas of the building. Through carefully phased construction, the renovation was thoughtfully coordinated to alleviate any impact on student education and safety – also a main priority for the district. The school’s facade received a drastic improvement with a streamlined glass-and-metal-forward modernization of the exterior skin. A 24-foot-wide circulation spine was also implemented, which stretches through the building to the new main entry and connects previously inaccessible north parking lot areas to the student commons and dining area. NWL also redesigned the school’s science labs with upgraded technology and casework. The renovation was completed in October 2018, expanding horizons, both literally and metaphorically, for the proud Viewmont Vikings.
